Before beginning any volunteer work at Broken Arrow Ranch & Sanctuary, all volunteers must attend a Ranch Orientation and Safety Training, which requires a $25 fee and a signed Liability Waiver. During orientation, volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt and handbook to help guide their experience. Volunteers are expected to follow all safety protocols and guidelines provided by sanctuary staff, and tasks will be assigned based on individual skills, experience, and the needs of the ranch. Volunteer work may involve physical labor, outdoor tasks in varying conditions, and interactions with animals, all of which carry inherent risks. By participating, volunteers take responsibility for their own health and safety while contributing to the care of the animals, land, and sanctuary community.
Step into the week with clarity and connection. This Monday, March 31st at 6pm PST, join us for a free Medicine Horse Monday: Sanctuary Session—a livestream experience of reflection, intention, and wisdom from the herd at Broken Arrow Ranch. This special gathering kicks off our new weekly series. Starting in April, sessions will be part of our monthly Wild & Wise Virtual Sanctuary Community.

Nothing makes Jupiter happier than a fresh water delivery—because that means playtime at the trough! 🌊🐴 While the rest of Beauty’s herd of 17 horses and mules waits for the splashy chaos to settle, Jupiter dives right in, turning the rushing water into his own personal splash pad.
With this herd drinking 200 gallons a day, the trough gets filled at least once, sometimes twice daily. In winter, instead of wrestling with hundreds of feet of frozen hose, we haul water in an IBC tote on the tractor. The process is loud and messy, so most of the herd holds back… except for Jupiter, of course!
On this day, two of the mules finally got curious enough to see what all the fuss was about. Maybe they’re thinking about joining in?
Besides keeping everyone hydrated, watering hole time is when we check in on the herd, making sure everyone looks and feels their best. And of course, they all hope it comes with a cookie.
Does your horse love to play in water too? Let us know in the comments! 💬⬇️

And just like that, the ground is covered in snow once more! Colibri was quiet the tour guide this morning showing me where the herd's nap/sunning spot was. She also decided this was her job and was adamant at telling curious Sammy to go away.
Colibri and Sammy are two of the youngest residents at Broken Arrow Ranch and Sanctuary. Sammy was born here on Mother’s Day 2023, and Colibri arrived as a young foal with the Wild Five in June of the same year. Growing up together, they’ve been the ultimate playmates—chasing, wrestling, and learning the ways of the herd.
Now, as they near their second year, the dynamics are shifting. The herd is guiding them to find their roles, shaping them into who they are meant to be. Providing equines with an environment where they can develop naturally—within a herd, on the land, as they are biologically designed—is our top priority.
Watching these two step into their next chapter is a reminder of why we do this work. 💛 #bendoregon #wildhorsesanctuary #BrokenArrowSanctuary #GrowingUpWild

This "lunch line" looks a little different. Usually, when a fresh bale drops, hooves thunder through the sage scrub, the herd scattering to check every pile, ensuring they’ve found the best spot. But today… there’s a quiet rhythm to their movement, a softness in the way they file into the clearing. No rushing, no wild sprints—just an unspoken understanding that there’s enough.
And, as always, I find my camera drawn to Thunder. His presence commands it. There’s something about him—his quiet strength, the effortless grace in his movement, the way he's always watching from behind his forelock. He doesn’t demand attention, but I can’t help but give it to him.
In moments like this, I feel the peace settle into my own body, mirroring theirs. The wild ones teach me more about trust, patience, and being present than I could ever put into words.

Every season speaks, shaping the rhythm of Broken Arrow Ranch and Sanctuary. The horses, the earth, and the shifting winds guide us—not just to care for them, but to listen. To move with nature’s flow. To grow, shed, and awaken to what is meant to be. This past year, that rhythm has felt stronger than ever, pulling us deeper into alignment with the land and its purpose. As we’ve followed its lead, a new chapter has begun to unfold…
🔥 Late Summer – A long-held vision finally found its moment. With the arrival of Ranch Custodians who shared our purpose, something shifted—Broken Arrow felt like it was returning to itself, becoming what it was always meant to be.
🍁 Autumn – The land exhaled, the trees let go, and so did we. This was a season of shedding—clearing space, refining our vision, and trusting that by letting go, we were making room for something even stronger to take root.
❄️ Winter – The desert quieted beneath a pale sky, the earth frozen and the junipers dusted in snow. The horses, steady as ever, held their ground, embodying resilience and presence. Their quiet wisdom guided us through the stillness, whispering of what was yet to come.
🌸 Now, Spring Stirs – The thaw begins, and with it, movement. The days stretch longer, renewal hums through the land, and we find ourselves stepping forward, ready. The foundation has been laid, the vision clear. It’s time to open the gates—to welcome our community into this next chapter of connection and growth.
