Rescue Stories from The Broken Arrow Ranch and Sanctuary

At BARS, we are about rescuing horses, mules and burros from harmful conditions and potential slaughter. It’s not possible without the help of wonderful supporters like you! Thank you for time, attention, and donations. We want to take this opportunity to share just a few of our rescues’ touching stories from 2022 and 2023. Black Beauty: As her name implies, Black Beauty is a stunning 15-year-old horse. Rescued from an Oklahoma kill pen, Beauty came to us in poor health. She arrived at our ranch with a body score of approximately 1. Since then, she’s gained approximately 300 pounds with a body score of 7 since being in our care! She now allows her baby Jupiter to be around people, which is a change showing she’s beginning to trust.  She is lead mare for the “The Wilds” which includes her baby Jupiter, Kalie, Lexi, Shiloh and Benson.

Falcon: This mustang comes to us having lived most recently at another ranch that was no longer able to sponsor him, hopeful to find him a new home. Falcon is a Yakima reservation mustang, rescued from the kill pens twice. After being rescued and adopted many times, he will now live out his years here at Broken Arrow Ranch and Sanctuary. When he arrived, we put him in a paddock near Bella and Cyrus. We watched closely, and the three showed interest in each other. We decided to introduce these three beautiful souls together. They instantly bonded in the small pasture!

Shilo: Shiloh, a beautiful bay with a striking blaze is our oldest at 20 years, but he is very wise. He was rescued with Ringo, both wild mustangs. After some time at BARS, we observed a remarkable shift in behavior. He has bonded with baby Jupiter and welcomed the mules into his herd and serves as the main protector of the mares.

Lexi and Kalie: These Two horses came from kill pens in Kansas and rescued by an angel donor. They spent 30 days in quarantine in Oklahoma together and arrived at our ranch in the summer of 2022. They have each gained close to 50 pounds since arriving and have settled in nicely. Lexi is a dominant mare, and acts like a bossy older sister to Kalie.

Benson: Rescued from an Oklahoma kill pen, Benson is an adorable four-year-old mini-mule who loves his treats! He decided he wanted to hang with the wild horses, so he squeezed through our smooth wire fencing leaving his mule pals behind!  Benson instantly bonded with the wild horses even though this is Shiloh’s herd. Shiloh graciously allows Benson to be co-leader of “The Wilds.”  Benson proudly leads the herd when it’s time to eat and to the watering hole.
